Places To Explore Away From the Area.

I am sharing with you some of my favorite places about an hour away from Deep Creek Lake. I have probably  been to Fallingwater many times including the gift shop as my husband and I simply love his work. Ohiopyle is on the way to Fallingwater and it is simply beautiful.  So skim over this page and look at some of my suggestions for a day trip away.

Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater

Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater is the most unique home in the world. It is only about an hours drive from Deep Creek Lake and a must see. Frank Lloyd Wright is probably the worlds most known architect and has created some unbelievable masterpieces but it if felt that Fallingwater is his best.

I love this home and have visited it many times over the years.  I also have furnished my log home with many of the items they sell at the gift shop. The property has a place where you can grab some lunch and it is quite good.

Best to call ahead and make reservations as they get booked quickly and to check their schedule to see if they are open. They do tend to close in the Winter Months.

Check out their "special" tours. I did the early one and since my husband and I were the only tourists on that tour, we got to go to places the public usually does not. I was thrilled to take the steps down to the water!

On your way to Fallingwater stop by Ohiopyle. The Lower Yough is located in Ohiopyle PA, in the heart of the Laurel Highlands. Talk about beautiful! It is class II-III+ whitewater rafting that flows through the beauty of Ohiopyle State Park.

If you haven't been rafting and want some fun whitewater, this is your trip. If you have been rafting before, there is still plenty of fun to be had! There are many formats to experience this wonderful section of the Lower Youghiogheny.  There are a few shops, pizza places and ice cream. This is a fun place to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the rapids and scenery.

Siranni's Pizza and Cafe

I have friends who travel 4 hours just to eat here. I'm not sure it is just the food or the atmosphere and tradition.  Either way, a must try if you are in the area.

Please note that they do not accept credit cards. I would bring cash. Very casual and not expensive. Great family place too. They do not have a website.

Davis West Virginia

John Denver sang a song....Almost Heaven West Virginia.  We love to get in our Porsche and explore the back roads of West Virginia.  One place to explore is Davis West Virginia. The wind turbines are impressive and something to see if you have not seen them before. Fun day trip

Mountain Made

Mountain Made supports the artistic efforts of West Virginia’s artists, craftsmen and craftswomen, and musicians. Over the yeas we have purchased some cool items for our home.

They have some furniture, art, glassware, stoneware and other collectables.  When you purchase handmade crafts, music, books, and fine art from Mountain Made, you are supporting professional artists, some of the best in their crafts, and not large corporations.

The Purple Fiddle Cafe

The Purple Fiddle Cafe, Brews and Stage is a family-friendly and non-smoking music venue and deli-style restaurant. They are located in the old DePollo General Store in historic Thomas, WV, in the beautiful Allegheny mountains. Every week, and always on Fridays and Saturdays, the Purple Fiddle presents professional, touring acts.

They often play host to old-time, bluegrass and traditional bands, but also spread our wings with rock n' roll, jazz, funk, reggae, old-country, blues, Celtic, folk, and even Latin bands. They collect a cover charge at the door that goes to pay for the bands, most of which are full-time professionals, traveling and playing nationally.

We encourage families to bring children to the shows no matter what their age. (Children under 12 are free!) We believe the warm crowd and amazing (mostly acoustic) music is a great experience for all.  In addition to the music, there are other things to occupy a person's time. We have books, games, and wireless internet access for those with laptops.

The restaurant serves the area's finest selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads, coffee, tea, homemade ice cream & desserts, plus wine & the area's best beer selection. In addition  they offer a small collection of eclectic gifts, and souvenirs for purchase.
